Remove points from your record
If you received points on your driver's license for a traffic violation, California allows you to take a traffic school course to get the point removed from your public driving record.
Common violations that usually incur a one-point penalty include speeding, running a stop sign or red light, and being at fault for an accident.
Since accumulating points will increase your car insurance rate in California, getting a point removed from your record can help keep your car insurance rates low.
If you have accumulated points, completing a traffic school course can help you remove a point before your license gets suspended. Your license will be suspended in California if you reach any of the following thresholds:
- 4 points in a 12-month period
- 6 points in a 24-month period
- 8 points in a 36-month period
California traffic school eligibility
In order to be eligible for traffic school in California and get points removed, you must meet the following criteria:
- You have not completed a traffic school course in the past 18 months.
- You have a valid driver's license.
- Your ticket is for an eligible moving violation.
- You have paid all of the court fees associated with your ticket.
- Your ticket did not result in a misdemeanor.
- You were driving a noncommercial vehicle.
If you qualify for traffic school, the court will usually send you a notice of eligibility. If you do not receive a notice and feel that you qualify, you should call the court that issued the citation.
Auto insurance discount for mature drivers
Drivers age 55 or older can take a mature driver–improvement course to refresh their driving knowledge and receive a discount on their auto insurance.
A California-approved mature driver–improvement course will cover the curriculum outlined by the California legislature and last from four to seven hours.
Drivers can take a "first-timers" defensive driving course or a renewal course. After you take the first course and receive your certificate of completion, you're eligible for a mature driver–improvement discount on your auto insurance, which lasts three years. After those three years, you'll have to take renewal courses to reinstate the discount.
You or your traffic school must send your certificate of completion to your insurer in order to get your discount. Each insurer can set their own discount rate. The typical range is 5–15%, but insurers can refuse to give a discount to someone with a poor driving record, even after a course is completed.
- The initial course lasts six to seven hours.
- A renewal course is at least four hours long.
Mature driver–improvement course providers in California
Some providers offer both in-person and online defensive driving classes. The prices below are for the initial course, which is typically $2–3 more expensive than a renewal class because of the longer time frame. While there is a $1 fee for presenting the certificate to your insurer, most course providers include this in their total fee.
