Virginia auto insurance requirements

Starting July 1, 2024, you need to have auto insurance to drive in Virginia.

Previously, you could drive on Virginia roads if you paid a $500 fee to the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles). This is called the Uninsured Motor Vehicle Fee.

If your car is registered as an uninsured vehicle, you'll need to buy insurance and update your registration by July 1, 2024.

Virginia state law requires that you have a minimum amount of auto insurance. This requirement is sometimes written as 30/60/20.

Minimum car insurance requirement in VA

  • Bodily injury liability: $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident
  • Property damage liability: $20,000 per accident

Virginia drivers should note the state is raising the required insurance limits on January 1, 2025.

You'll need to have a policy with 50/100/25 in liability coverage. Your insurance company should automatically increase your limits when the new requirement goes into effect. However, you may see your insurance rates go up.

If you only have the required minimum coverage then you're putting yourself at risk. That's because you're responsible for paying any extra costs after you meet your coverage limits. Consider getting full coverage by raising your liability limits and adding collision and comprehensive insurance.
